Series 66 vs 63+65: Which Path Should I Take?

Compare the Series 66 against the 63 and 65 combo so you can choose the fastest route to registration.

March 8, 2025

If you hold the Series 7 (or plan to), you face a fork in the road: earn the Series 66 or pair the Series 63 with the Series 65. Here is how we help advisors decide.

Key Differences at a Glance

PathExamsTime CommitmentFocus Areas
Series 661 exam6–8 weeksState law + advisory concepts
Series 63 + 652 exams8–12 weeksState law (63) + advisory & economics (65)

When the Series 66 Wins

  • You already passed the Series 7. The 66 assumes you know product rules, so prep time focuses on law and advisory content.
  • You want one test date. Busy advisors prefer one all-in exam rather than juggling two calendars.
  • Your firm wants dual registration. The 66 satisfies both state law and advisory requirements in a single shot.

When 63 + 65 Makes Sense

  • You do not need the Series 7. Insurance-focused reps sometimes skip the 7, making 63 + 65 the compliant choice.
  • You learn better in chapters. Sitting for the law content first (63) then advisory (65) can lighten cognitive load.
  • Your state or firm requires it. A few firms still default to 63 + 65 for historical reasons—always confirm internally.

Study Time Comparison

  • Series 66: We design a 6–8 week plan with alternating law and planning labs, plus weekly math workshops.
  • Series 63 + 65: Expect 3–4 weeks for the 63 and 5–6 weeks for the 65, with a light week between exams to reset.

Coaching Recommendation Framework

  1. Inventory existing licenses and professional designations.
  2. Map firm expectations and state requirements.
  3. Evaluate study availability and timeline.
  4. Choose the exam path that produces the fastest, most sustainable win.
