Series 7: The 10 Most Missed Concepts

Pinpoint the Series 7 question types that cost candidates the most points and learn how to tackle them.

January 15, 2025

The Series 7 rewards candidates who can apply core concepts under time pressure. Over the last 18 months of coaching, these are the ten topics our learners struggled with the most—and how we closed the gap.

1. Options Contracts with Tax Implications

Traders often remember the mechanics of calls and puts, but miss how holding periods impact tax treatment. Build a one-page decision tree that maps holding period, intrinsic value, and closing action.

2. Municipal Bond Tax Equivalent Yield

You must be fluent in the tax-equivalent yield formula. Practice plugging in marginal tax brackets from at least five different client scenarios until you can do it in 20 seconds.

3. Breakpoints & LOIs

Know how to qualify households, beneficial owners, and corporate accounts. We drill this with rapid-fire customer stories so you can identify breakpoint opportunities instantly.

4. Options Disclosure Document Timing

Remember: the ODD must be delivered at or before account approval. Build flash cards with each FINRA timing rule on one side and the requirement on the other.

5. Margin Account Restrictions

Initial requirements, maintenance calls, and prohibited activities in retirement accounts still trip up experienced reps. Make a three-column chart—long, short, portfolio margin—to visualize the differences.

6. Structured Products & Principal Protection

FINRA loves asking when structured notes are not appropriate. Practice describing the payoff diagram aloud before answering multiple-choice questions.

7. Suitability for Variable Life Policies

Tie your answer to beneficiary needs, premium flexibility, and market risk tolerance. We rehearse suitability scripts aloud until they feel natural.

8. Secondary Market Markups

When acting as principal, the markup must be fair. Memorize the five fair pricing factors and build sample ticket calculations to reinforce.

9. Forward vs. Futures Contracts

Use the mnemonic FoRward = Retail (OTC, customized) vs. Futures = Standardized. If the question references clearinghouses, you are almost certainly in futures territory.

10. Taxation of Dividends vs. Interest

Set up daily micro-drills covering tax treatment of dividends, interest, and capital gains. Your goal is recall in under five seconds per item.

How to Drill These Topics

  1. Create a 30-question mixed quiz covering the items above.
  2. Track which items you miss and why—content gap, calculation error, or rushing.
  3. Book a coaching session to debrief trends and assign targeted drills for the next seven days.

Set your next practice exam date before you log off today. Momentum is your unfair advantage.
