CFP® Exam: How to Build a 4-Week Sprint Plan
A focused four-week CFP® sprint that balances case study practice, retention, and life obligations.
February 2, 2025
The final month before the CFP® exam feels intense—and that is okay. A measured sprint keeps your progress aligned with the Board's blueprint while protecting your energy.
Week 1: Recalibrate & Commit
- Diagnostic: Take a 50-question mixed exam to surface domain gaps.
- Calendar: Block four 90-minute sessions and one 3-hour case lab on your calendar.
- Foundation: Review ethics, client communication, and planning process steps.
Week 2: Case Study Immersion
- Case Lab: Work through two full-length cases. Narrate your rationale, then grade your answer using the Board's rubric.
- Math Drills: Rehearse TVM, IRR, NPV, and insurance needs calculators until keystrokes are muscle memory.
- Accountability: Send your coach a quick Loom or voice note summarizing lessons learned.
Week 3: Integration & Remediation
- Domain Focus: Spend one session each on tax, retirement, investment, and insurance. Summarize key rules in your own words.
- Flash Review: Build 30 flash prompts that force you to connect domains (e.g., how estate planning impacts tax strategies).
- Energy Check: Protect sleep and nutrition—cognitive stamina matters now.
Week 4: Simulation & Taper
- Full Simulation: Take a final mock exam at the same time of day as your real test.
- Debrief: Meet with your coach to assign final micro-drills for the gaps that remain.
- Taper: Reduce study volume by 30% in the final 72 hours. Focus on light review, walking, and rest.
Bonus Tips
- Communicate early with family, teammates, and clients so they understand your sprint schedule.
- Stack accountability—weekly coaching touchpoints, quick check-in texts, and scheduled reviews keep you honest.
- Visualize test day down to arrival time, snacks, and break routines. Familiarity lowers anxiety.
